From Code to Conservation: Software for Impact

As the software developer and project lead for WildALERT, I had the opportunity to work with DENR-BMB and the USAID-Protect Wildlife Project and Asian Development Bank in creating a mobile and web-based tool to help strengthen wildlife law enforcement in the Philippines. Designed with offline functionality, an accessible species library of over 480 entries, and a simple yet secure reporting system, the app allows field enforcers and eventually the public to document wildlife incidents even in remote areas. Through pilot testing with partner agencies such as the PNP, NBI, and Coast Guard, we were able to improve its usability and ensure it supports existing enforcement workflows. At the close of the project, WildALERT was officially turned over to DENR, with the hope that it will continue to be of service in protecting the country’s biodiversity and addressing wildlife trafficking.

“In recent memory, this is the only single digital platform that has the function to help identify species and also to submit reports on potential wildlife crimes,” BMB wildlife law enforcer told the Inquirer.
"The system, made up of a mobile app and a reporting management platform, helps users correctly identify rescued wildlife species and promptly submit digitized reports of wildlife law violations. This can help improve the daily enforcement operations of the DENR and partner agencies across the country."  American embassy told the PhilStar Global
“Science-based crime, tech-based action - Wildlife prosecution is a science-based case. And if we are able to bridge this gap from the discovery of the crime or illegal activity up to the time of reporting, then apprehension will be speedy. It will facilitate the actual and on-time apprehension of the violators” - Lawyer and the officer in charge at the DENR’s Wildlife Resources Division (WRD)

Technology becomes truly powerful when it protects what cannot protect itself.
